In a move poised to reshape the future of stroke treatment technology, Medtronic to buy Scientia Vascular marks a major step toward expanding innovation in neurovascular care.

The global medical technology leader announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the private company for $550 million, subject to customary adjustments. The deal could also include additional undisclosed milestone and earn-out payments following completion of the acquisition.

The transaction brings together two companies aiming to tackle one of medicine’s most urgent challenges: treating complex brain vascular conditions where every second can determine life or death.

A Strategic Move to Strengthen Neurovascular Care

Medtronic said the acquisition will integrate breakthrough technologies developed by Scientia Vascular into its existing neurovascular portfolio.

Scientia, headquartered in Salt Lake City, employs roughly 310 people and has built a reputation for advanced access technologies used in treating complex cerebrovascular conditions.

Under founder and chief technology officer John Lippert, the company developed a range of guidewires and catheter systems designed to help physicians navigate the intricate pathways of the brain’s blood vessels.

Those products are expected to complement Medtronic’s existing tools, creating a more comprehensive suite designed to support doctors throughout the entire neurovascular treatment process.

Why Speed Matters in Stroke Treatment

The deal arrives against the backdrop of a global health reality: stroke remains one of the world’s most devastating medical emergencies.

Every moment counts. When blood flow to the brain is blocked, millions of brain cells die each second.

Today, stroke stands as the third leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause of long-term disability.

Treating these conditions can be exceptionally challenging because the brain’s vascular system is far more complex than blood vessels elsewhere in the body. Twisting and narrow arteries often make it difficult for physicians to reach blockages or aneurysms quickly.

Even small delays in reaching the problem area can impact treatment success.

Scientia’s Technology Aims to Navigate the Brain’s Complexity

Scientia’s platform was engineered to overcome those anatomical challenges.

Its specialized access systems are designed to improve navigability through tortuous cerebral vessels, helping physicians reach treatment sites more efficiently.

By simplifying the pathway through the brain’s vascular maze, the technology aims to accelerate procedures and improve clinical outcomes.

“Medtronic is thrilled to acquire Scientia to accelerate meaningful innovation in neurovascular care,” said Linnea Burman, senior vice president and president of Medtronic’s Neurovascular business within the company’s neuroscience portfolio.

Burman noted that combining Medtronic’s therapies with Scientia’s access technologies will help support treatments for both hemorrhagic strokes and acute ischemic strokes.

“With 12 million people globally suffering from stroke each year, we look forward to contributing to better patient outcomes around the world,” she said.
