It’s evident that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are more aligned than ever in their mission to ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of children nationwide. The Trump administration has instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to find unaccompanied migrant children who entered the United States without guardians.

This initiative, detailed in an internal ICE memo titled “Unaccompanied Alien Children Joint Initiative Field Implementation,” outlines a phased approach that began on January 27. The primary objective is to enforce immigration laws while safeguarding these minors from human trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

Since 2019, over 600,000 unaccompanied children have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. Many have been ordered deported due to missed court hearings. ICE’s strategy categorizes these children into three priority groups: “flight risk,” “public safety,” and “border security,” with a focus on those deemed flight risks. This approach aims to ensure that children are either reunited with their families or placed in safe environments, preventing potential exploitation.

Republican lawmakers have cited this policy as a necessary measure, arguing that it rectifies a failure of the previous administration. Last year, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) internal watchdog report found that ICE had not served notices to appear to more than 291,000 unaccompanied migrant children, leading to thousands of missed court hearings. The report also noted that over the past five years, more than 32,000 minors failed to appear for their immigration proceedings, further complicating efforts to ensure their safety.
