Furthermore, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, faces investigation regarding its recently implemented "pay or consent" model. This model's compatibility with the act's mandate, requiring user consent for the amalgamation or cross-use of personal data across distinct core platform services, is under question.
Commissioner's Warning
Thierry Breton, the EU's commissioner for the internal market, issued a stern caution to the tech giants, emphasizing the looming possibility of substantial fines should the investigation unearth non-compliance with the act. Breton underscored the necessity for a fairer and more transparent digital space for European citizens and businesses.
