NASA’s latest release of HiRISE photographs of interstellar comet 31/ATLAS has left many sky watchers and researchers frustrated. Although NASA finally unveiled images after a long delay caused by the government shutdown, the pictures were unexpectedly blurry
Amateur astronomers have been sharing clearer views online. The space agency’s explanation has only fueled more discussion about what the comet might truly be.
A Long-Awaited Reveal Falls Flat
NASA’s livestream event was expected to showcase crisp, groundbreaking imagery from some of the agency’s most advanced instruments. But when the fuzzy photos of 3I/ATLAS appeared, confusion quickly turned into disappointment.
The comet has drawn global attention since its July 1, 2025, discovery by the ATLAS observatory in Chile. With unusual features related to its trajectory, anti-tail, chemical makeup, and mysterious origin, scientists — including Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb — believed NASA was prepared to reveal something extraordinary.
“People were expecting something big,” one viewer wrote after the event. “Instead, the update felt basic. Almost dismissive.”

NASA Says Why the 31/ATLAS Images Look Blurry
NASA showcased images from HiRISE, MAVEN, STEREO, SOHO, Psyche, and Lucy, yet all appeared low-resolution. NASA later clarified on social media that the spacecraft observing the comet was not designed to track fast-moving, faint interstellar objects at enormous distances.
The HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter — built by Ball Aerospace and operated by the University of Arizona — is the most powerful camera ever sent to another planet. Its purpose is to photograph Mars’s surface, not distant, rapidly moving comets.
NASA even posted a comparison image, showing a razor-sharp Martian landscape next to the fuzzy 3I/ATLAS photo.
Leslie Tamppari of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explained:
“This is one of those rare occasions where we get to study a passing space object, as well.”
HiRISE “The Real Issue Isn’t the Blurry Image”
Though NASA assured the public that the images still hold scientific value, Avi Loeb criticized the agency’s response, saying the real problem is the lack of meaningful discussion.
