The stark reality of life behind bars in New York has been thrown into sharp relief this week, as the death of an inmate at Auburn Correctional Facility coincides with a disruptive strike by prison guards across the state.
On Saturday, Jonathon Grant, a 61-year-old inmate, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at Auburn Correctional Facility and was later pronounced dead. He had been serving a 34-to-40-year sentence for convictions of rape and burglary. Whether the prison’s staffing shortages contributed to his death remains uncertain, with the cause still pending determination by a medical examiner.
