In a stunning development, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday that the federal bribery case against him is over, citing a U.S. Department of Justice directive ordering prosecutors to drop the charges.

In an address to New Yorkers, Adams declared his innocence, maintaining that he never traded political power for personal gain.

Despite Adams’ proclamation, the case has not yet been formally dismissed in court. No motion to drop the charges has been filed, and any such move would require the approval of U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho.

DOJ Orders Dismissal, Cites Ethics and Politics

A memo from acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove instructed federal prosecutors in Manhattan to dismiss the bribery and corruption charges against Adams. However, the memo explicitly stated that the decision was not based on the strength of the evidence, but rather on political and ethical concerns.

Bove pointed to the timing of the indictment, suggesting that the case may have been politically motivated, given Adams’ public criticism of former President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

He also argued that the prosecution had hindered Adams’ ability to focus on New York City’s challenges, particularly crime and immigration enforcement—key issues in the Trump administration’s agenda.

Despite these justifications, Bove was careful to deny any quid pro quo between Adams and the federal government.

Bribery Allegations and Foreign Influence

The indictment, filed last September, accused Adams of accepting luxurious hotel stays and first-class flights from Turkish agents in exchange for political favors, including allegedly fast-tracking approvals for a Turkish consulate in New York.

Prosecutors also claimed Adams illegally funneled foreign and corporate donations into his campaign using straw donors, potentially violating campaign finance laws.

Despite these serious allegations, the Justice Department’s move effectively halts the case—for now.

Backlash Over Dismissal Sparks Political Firestorm

The decision to drop the case ignited a furious backlash from Adams’ political rivals, who accused the DOJ of cutting a backroom deal. Critics claim the move leaves Adams beholden to Trump, as the charges were dismissed "without prejudice", meaning they could be reinstated at any time.

The judge’s chambers have yet to confirm whether the letter has been received, and as of Tuesday afternoon, it had not appeared on the court docket.
