The United States and Israel carried out their most sweeping assault on Iran in decades on Saturday, with Israel announcing that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed during the operation.
A senior Israeli official told Reuters that Khamenei’s body had been recovered. Tehran condemned the strikes as unprovoked and unlawful, retaliating with missile launches targeting Israel and at least seven other nations, including Gulf countries that host American military bases.
US President Donald Trump said the objective of the operation was to eliminate a long-standing threat from a state he said had menaced the United States for decades and to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Trump also urged Iran’s security forces to surrender and called on Iranians to overthrow their government once the bombing campaign concludes.
