Skywatchers: Tuesday brings a total eclipse of the Blood Moon

So, the red light is bent or refracted, as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere and ends up shining on the Moon. Depending on our planet’s atmosphere you can expect either a ghostly red or a bright fire red. In times of volcanic eruptions, widespread fire, or dust storms everything is redder.

Scattering is the reason for red sunrises and sunsets, as well. Light from the Sun meshes with atmospheric gases from Earth. And filters out the blue light, as it enhances red light.
