The moniker "Wolf Moon" finds its roots in mythology, attributed to the packs of wolves that were believed to howl outside villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter, typically around January. Although the connection between wolves and lunar howling might be a myth, the name has endured through time, giving this celestial event a mystical aura. The Wolf Moon goes by various names in different regions, reflecting its cultural significance. In European lore, it is also known as the "Ice Moon" and the "Old Moon." The Maine Farmers' Almanac, dating back to the 1930s, has contributed "Indian" names for full moons, with the Wolf Moon being associated with the howling wolves of winter. European names, such as the Ice Moon and Old Moon, have become widely recognized. Across diverse traditions, this full moon holds significance. In the Hindu calendar, it marks Shakambhari Purnima and the conclusion of the Shakambari Navratri holiday. For Buddhists in Sri Lanka, it is Duruthu Poya, commemorating Siddhartha Gautama Buddha's inaugural visit. In the Hebrew calendar, the Wolf Moon falls in the middle of the month Shevat, aligning with Tu BiShvat, a celebration known as "Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot" or "New Year of the Trees." This day is observed as an ecological awareness event in contemporary Israel, with the planting of trees symbolizing renewal and environmental consciousness.
