The Democratic Republic of the Congo has now reported 1,118 confirmed cases, including 291 deaths, according to government data released Wednesday. A doctor who recently returned to France from Congo has also tested positive, marking the first confirmed case connected to the outbreak in Europe.

Earlier World Health Organization data showed the virus spreading across dozens of health zones in three Congolese provinces. Thousands of people identified as possible contacts required monitoring.

Health officials have cautioned that some sudden increases in reported infections may reflect laboratories processing previously collected samples rather than hundreds of people becoming infected in a single day.

That distinction does not make the outbreak less serious. It does show why daily totals must be interpreted carefully as testing capacity expands and delayed results are added to official counts.

Conflict, population displacement, damaged health infrastructure and frequent cross-border movement have made the response more difficult. Medical teams must locate contacts, isolate patients and safely bury those who die while operating in communities already strained by violence and humanitarian crises.

CDC Models Show Why Isolation Matters

The CDC has warned that the outbreak could become one of the largest Ebola epidemics on record if health authorities cannot isolate a sufficient percentage of infected patients.

In one modeled scenario, researchers estimated a 65 percent probability that cases could exceed 20,000 within three months if only 20 percent of infected people were successfully isolated.

That figure is not a prediction that 20,000 infections will occur. It represents one possible outcome under poor isolation conditions.

The same model showed that stronger intervention could sharply reduce the danger. When researchers assumed that 70 percent of infected patients were successfully isolated, 94 percent of simulations produced fewer than 10,000 cases.

The difference demonstrates why treatment centers, testing, protective equipment and contact tracing are central to the funding request. Ebola transmission can accelerate when sick patients remain in their communities without diagnosis or isolation.

The CDC has already accessed $107 million from an infectious-disease rapid-response reserve fund. More than 125 CDC staff members were working across Congo and Uganda as of June 18, supporting laboratories, surveillance, border health, safe burials and infection-control efforts.
