Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the official launch of the “Golden Dome” missile defense system—a sweeping new initiative designed to shield the United States from foreign missile attacks, including those launched from space.

The ambitious program aims to overhaul the country’s aging missile defense systems, which Trump emphasized have “not materially changed in 40 years.”

General Michael Guetlein of the U.S. Space Force, a four-star general respected for his missile defense experience, has been appointed to oversee the project.

The announcement comes after Trump’s January executive order in his second term directing the Pentagon to develop a “next-generation missile defense shield.” Trump was flanked by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office during the reveal.

“Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space,” Trump said. “Forever ending the missile threat to the American homeland.”

Initial Funding and International Interest

Trump noted that Republican lawmakers have agreed to allocate $25 billion in initial funding, with future costs expected to balloon significantly.
