The Congressional Budget Office estimates the program’s total cost could exceed $540 billion over 20 years, although Trump later suggested the figure could be closer to $175 billion based on the design architecture he has now chosen.
Canada has reportedly expressed interest in participating in the project, signaling potential for international cooperation.
Three-Dome Defense Options
Although details remain classified, Trump is expected to choose among three design options drafted by the Pentagon. They are nicknamed the Silver, Gold, and Platinum Dome options. These evolved versions of the initial “Moonshot Plus” and “Moonshot Plus Plus” concepts, were renamed by Secretary Hegseth.
Each option integrates existing U.S. defense capabilities with cutting-edge technologies. The designs would combine:
- Ground-based interceptors
- Space-based surveillance and tracking satellites
- Advanced missile-killing payloads
The level of integration and tech ambition will determine the ultimate cost and timeline.
