Gabbard Resignation Shakes Trump Administration as DNI Steps Down Over Husband’s Cancer Battle

The unexpected Gabbard Resignation announcement has added to the growing list of departures within President Donald Trump’s administration. Tulsi Gabbard confirmed Friday that she is resigning from her role as director of national intelligence to support her husband, Abraham Williams, who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard said her resignation will officially take effect on June 30. In a letter addressed to Donald Trump, she explained that family responsibilities made it impossible to continue in one of the nation’s most demanding intelligence positions.

“I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position,” Gabbard wrote.

According to reports first published by Fox News, the resignation marks another major personnel shift inside the Trump administration during his second term.

Trump Confirms Gabbard Resignation

Trump later addressed the resignation publicly in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, praising Gabbard for her service.

“She has done an incredible job, and we will miss her,” Trump reportedly wrote.

The president also announced that Aaron Lukas will assume the role in an acting capacity following Gabbard’s departure.

As director of national intelligence, Gabbard oversaw the U.S. intelligence community, which includes 18 intelligence agencies and organizations responsible for national security analysis and coordination.

Gabbard’s Unusual Political Journey

Before joining Trump’s administration, Gabbard served as a Democratic congresswoman representing Hawaii. Over time, she distanced herself from the Democratic Party and later aligned herself with Republicans, eventually endorsing Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.

A military veteran who served in the Middle East, Gabbard became known for her anti-interventionist foreign policy views. She frequently criticized U.S. involvement in overseas conflicts and positioned herself as a supporter of restrained military engagement.

Her endorsement of Trump came largely because she viewed him as less likely to involve the United States in prolonged international conflicts.

Tensions Inside the Administration Add to Gabbard Resignation

Despite her high-profile role, Gabbard’s tenure was often marked by reports of friction within the administration.

One of the most notable controversies came during debates surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. As Trump weighed military action against Iran last year, Gabbard released a video warning against escalating tensions between nuclear powers and criticized what she described as “warmongers.”

The comments reportedly angered Trump and created visible divisions between the president and his intelligence chief.

According to political outlet Politico, Trump later publicly dismissed Gabbard’s earlier Senate testimony regarding Iran’s nuclear intentions, telling reporters, “I don’t care what she said,” before adding, “She’s wrong.”

Gabbard also faced scrutiny after appearing during an FBI raid on a Georgia election office connected to records from the 2020 presidential election.

Growing List of Administration Exits

The Gabbard resignation continues a trend of high-level departures during Trump’s second administration.

Earlier this year, former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer stepped down to pursue a private-sector opportunity.

In April, Trump also removed former Attorney General Pam Bondi amid criticism related to her handling of issues connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Bondi was replaced on an interim basis by Todd Blanche.

Meanwhile, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was removed following controversies tied to immigration enforcement operations.

The series of departures has fueled continued scrutiny over stability inside the administration as Trump navigates his second term in office.

What Comes After Gabbard Resignation

Gabbard has not indicated what her plans may involve after leaving government service. For now, she says her focus will remain on supporting her husband during his medical treatment.

Her departure closes a brief but highly visible chapter in Trump’s administration and leaves another key national security role temporarily under acting leadership.
