The United States has launched “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz, a large-scale maritime operation designed to escort stranded vessels and restore safe navigation for global trade.

The mission, announced by Donald Trump, comes after months of escalating tensions that left dozens of neutral ships—and their crews—unable to safely exit the region.

Dubbed Project Freedom, the initiative began early Monday morning under the coordination of United States Central Command (CENTCOM). The operation is one of the most significant naval mobilizations in recent years, involving:

• Over 100 aircraft across air and sea domains
• Multi-domain unmanned systems
• Approximately 15,000 U.S. service members

According to CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper, the mission is both defensive and strategic:

“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade.”

The goal is clear: ensure that commercial vessels trapped by conflict can safely transit one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.

The Strait of Hormuz is not just another maritime route—it is a vital artery of the global economy. Roughly 25% of the world’s seaborne oil trade passes through this narrow channel, along with large volumes of liquefied natural gas, fuel, and fertilizer.

Disruptions in this region have immediate global consequences. In the United States, fuel prices have already surged. According to AAA, the national average price for regular gasoline reached $4.46 per gallon, with significantly higher costs in western states like California, where prices exceed $6 per gallon.

The launch of Project Freedom has not occurred without controversy. Iran’s state-affiliated Fars News Agency claimed that missiles struck a U.S. warship near Jask Island. CENTCOM quickly dismissed the report as false, stating unequivocally that no U.S. Navy vessels had been hit.
