A Maryland man wrongfully convicted of the 1981 Memorial Day Murders has filed a lawsuit against the prosecutors and police officers who helped secure his convictions, seeking accountability after spending more than three decades in prison for crimes he did not commit.

A Fight for Justice After Decades Behind Bars

John N. Huffington, now 62, was twice sentenced to death in connection with the killings of Diane Becker and Joseph Hudson in Abingdon, Maryland. Becker was stabbed to death inside her recreational vehicle while her 4-year-old son was unharmed; Hudson, Becker’s boyfriend, was found fatally shot several miles away.

Huffington served 32 years behind bars, including 10 years on death row, before his eventual release in 2013 and full pardon in 2023. 

His case, detailed by The Washington Post and The Independent, highlights long-standing issues of prosecutorial misconduct and flawed forensic evidence in the U.S. criminal justice system.

From Death Row to Exoneration

Huffington’s legal battle began in 1981 when he was arrested at just 18 years old. Despite maintaining his innocence, he was convicted twice and spent decades fighting for his freedom. 

His persistence — and the discovery of evidence hidden by police and prosecutors led to the disbarment of Harford County State’s Attorney Joseph I. Cassilly, who prosecuted him.

Cassilly failed to disclose a 1999 letter from the FBI, which informed him that forensic agent Michael Malone had given false testimony linking Huffington to hair found at the crime scene. This letter remained buried until 2011, when a Washington Post reporter discovered it and alerted Huffington’s attorneys at Ropes & Gray.

False Evidence in Memorial Day Murders Case

DNA testing in 2013 confirmed Huffington was not the source of the hair evidence, prompting the courts to vacate his conviction. Rather than face a third trial, he reluctantly entered an Alford plea in 2017 — a legal move acknowledging sufficient evidence for conviction without admitting guilt.

“It was easily the hardest decision of my life,” Huffington told The Washington Post. “I didn’t want to do that.”

On July 15, 2025, Huffington filed a federal lawsuit in Baltimore, naming Cassilly, assistant prosecutor Gerard Comen, and Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives David Saneman, William Van Horn, and Wesley J. Picha as defendants. All but Saneman are deceased.

The New Lawsuit

The suit accuses them of fabricating evidence, coercing witnesses, and suppressing exculpatory information that could have cleared him. It also claims the Harford County government bears responsibility since Cassilly acted as its policymaker during the prosecution.
