Authorities described the conditions as "worse than livestock," alleging the children had spent years living in overcrowded, unsanitary surroundings.

Four Family Members Abused 16 Children

Authorities arrested four relatives in connection with the investigation:

• Gary Siders Jr., 36
• Elizabeth Siders, 33
• Gary Siders Sr., 73
• Christina Siders, 67

The adults have been charged with multiple counts of child abuse. According to investigators, the family frequently relocated over the past two decades, and the children were not enrolled in school for extended periods.

Officials believe the children spent much of their time confined to a small room inside the home, although investigators have not publicly disclosed how long the alleged abuse continued.

The criminal investigation remains active, and prosecutors have indicated that additional evidence is still being reviewed.

Community Left Stunned

The discovery has deeply shaken residents of Hamden, a village of roughly 700 people in southeastern Ohio.

Many neighbors said they never realized so many children were living at the property.

Emily Collins, owner of VC Farm & Floral in nearby McArthur, told The Associated Press the case has left the community devastated.

"Right under our noses and nobody was able to help them sooner," Collins said. "It's just crazy with all the wonderful things going on in our little Hallmark town and this is what puts us on the radar. It's really sad."

16 Children Abuse Investigation 

Authorities have not publicly disclosed what separate investigation led deputies to the home on June 30, ultimately uncovering the alleged abuse.

The rescued children are now receiving medical evaluations, counseling and protective care while child welfare officials work to determine their long-term needs.

Investigators continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses as they seek to determine the full scope of the alleged abuse.
