Saturday’s mass shooting event in Monterrey, California proved once again that mass shootings are not political, or race-based. 

These killers are White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic. They are sometimes children or senior citizens. They are both Democrats and Republicans. Some of them are not American citizens.

Some of these shootings are gang or cartel related. 

Mass shooters have sometimes worn masks or disguises. And in 2008 the killer in Covina, California was dressed as Santa Claus.

Some are “familicides” like the January 4 shooting that occurred in Enoch, Utah. Others are more random where the killers don’t know their victims.

They shoot indiscriminately. They shoot Whites, Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics. They don’t care who they kill.

Mass shootings are difficult to understand and hard to profile. 

Mass Shooting in Monterey Park

Saturday night a gunman opened fire in a Monterey Park dance studio ballroom. He killed 10 people. And wounded 10 others, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

The shooting suspect has been identified as an “Asian male.” And used a high-powered assault rifle at close range.

The shooting took place on Lunar New Year’s Eve East of downtown Los Angeles.

Monterey Park was hosting the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival this weekend, marking the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar. The annual two-day street festival draws tens of thousands of celebrants. This is one of the biggest events in the LA region.

More than 65% of Monterey Park's 60,000 residents identify as Asian American, per the U.S. Census Bureau.

Just last week at a Martin Luther King Jr Day celebration, eight people were wounded and one died when a suspected 2 shooters opened fire. Four others were injured in the stampede to escape the bullet barrage.

Mass Shooting in Goshen farming community

The Monterey Park shootings came just five days after six people were murdered in Tulare County in California’s Central Valley in the Goshen farming community.

 Among the 6 shot and killed were a 10-month-old baby, his 16-year-old mother, and his grandmother. Three innocent people from 3 generations of the same family.

There are 2 suspects. Both are Hispanic. And the other 3 people killed are believed to be family members who were affiliated with the cartel.  

Goshen, a semi-rural community of about 3,000 residents, is located 35 miles southeast of Fresno in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley.

Other recent mass shootings

In Enoch, Utah, eight family members were shot and killed. Three adults and five children were the targets of another family member, 42-year-old Michael Haight. The family members were Caucasians.

One of the last mass shootings of this scale happened on Christmas Eve in 2008 when a man dressed as Santa Claus, was armed with five handguns. Killed 9 people including his ex-wife and her family.

 In 2018, 12 people died at the Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks where an ex-Marine targeted college kids. Another type of mass shooting occurred in San Bernardino, California, where a terrorist killed 14 people in 2015.
