A former forensic scientist with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is under scrutiny following revelations of manipulated DNA test results in hundreds of cases, shedding light on potential discrepancies spanning nearly 30-years of work. 

Yvonne "Missy" Woods, who served at the CBI crime lab for 29 years, is at the center of an internal affairs investigation that has found some discrepancies in her testing procedures. 

Fortunately, Woods did not fabricate DNA profiles or matches.

In response to the investigation, Woods was placed on administrative leave in October before retiring in November.

Forensic scientist under scrutiny

The investigation began last September. Since that time she has had no involvement in laboratory work.

 To date it has uncovered a pattern of data manipulation and incomplete test results in cases dating back to 2008. Her actions cast doubt on the integrity of her work and raised concerns about the accuracy of previous analyses.

According to the CBI, Woods' misconduct impacted a staggering 652 cases between 2008 and 2023. This has prompted a comprehensive review of her entire body of work dating back to 1994. 

The bureau emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, acknowledging the critical importance of public trust in its operations.

 The CBI has enlisted third-party resources to ensure the integrity of its inquiry, alongside a concurrent criminal investigation into Woods' actions.

Key findings from the internal investigation revealed instances where Woods manipulated data, deleted crucial information, and failed to adhere to standard operating procedures. 

Her actions have been described as “intentional deviations from protocol” and have raised serious questions about the reliability of her analyses.

The scope of the investigation extends beyond Woods' individual case load, with the CBI conducting an audit of all DNA analysts to verify the accuracy and completeness of its records. Furthermore, indications of similar misconduct by another DNA analyst at the Northern Colorado Regional Forensic Laboratory have prompted additional scrutiny.

Chiara Wuensch, employed by the Weld County Sheriff’s Office for over a decade, was terminated following suspicions of data manipulation. The sheriff's office has expressed its intent to pursue criminal charges against Wuensch pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

The fallout from Woods' misconduct has prompted statewide action, with the Colorado Department of Public Safety seeking funding for an independent lab to retest thousands of DNA samples and review affected cases. The objective is to rectify potential errors and ensure the integrity of the criminal justice system.

In response to the allegations, Woods' attorney maintained that while deviations from protocol occurred, there was no evidence of fabricated results or false testimony. Nevertheless, Woods remains committed to cooperating with law enforcement to safeguard the integrity of her work and uphold the principles of justice.

The revelations surrounding Woods' conduct underscore the critical role of forensic science in the criminal justice system and highlight the importance of rigorous oversight and accountability. As investigations continue, stakeholders are left grappling with the implications of compromised evidence and the pursuit of justice for affected individuals.
