Anti-AI US Protests Erupt Nationwide As Data Center Backlash Boils Over

Anti AI us protests

What started as scattered local grumbling has exploded into a full-blown national reckoning. On Saturday, thousands of Americans poured into streets from Alaska to Florida, part of a coordinated wave of anti-AI US protests aimed squarely at the towering, humming data centers powering the artificial intelligence boom.

It was less a single demonstration than a chain reaction — one match lighting a hundred others across the map.

More Than 100 Rallies, One Unified Target

The demonstrations were organized by Humans First, a freshly minted conservative nonprofit that has cast itself as the David to "Big AI's" Goliath. Organizers planned over 100 separate protests throughout the day, stretching from Wasilla in southcentral Alaska all the way down to the sun-soaked coastline of Naples, Florida.

Texas, unsurprisingly, became a hotspot — hosting 18 separate demonstrations. Cheap land, ready access to power grids, and generous tax incentives have turned the Lone Star State into something of a magnet for data center developers, and now, apparently, for the people determined to stop them.

A Small New Jersey Borough Becomes A Battleground

Nowhere did the fight feel more personal than in Kenilworth, New Jersey, a borough of roughly 8,500 residents that suddenly found itself squaring off against a proposed $1.8 billion AI data center.

Around 10 a.m., a crowd gathered outside the local municipal court, determined to make their voices heard against a project the local planning board had already greenlit back in May. Opposition has only intensified since — a petition launched in April to halt construction has since collected more than 12,000 signatures, a number that dwarfs the town's entire population.

Signs, Chalk, And Chants In The Rain

Protest signs did double duty as both warning and warning shot. "You think this is pressure? Wait 'til there's no water pressure," read one. "Build community, not data centers," read another — a slogan simple enough to fit on cardboard but sharp enough to sting.

Some demonstrators armed themselves with noise makers — plastic horns, whistles, even a drum — turning the protest into something closer to a parade of dissent. Others knelt to scrawl messages in colored chalk across nearby sidewalks. When heavy rain rolled in later that day, the crowd didn't scatter. Instead, they zipped up ponchos, huddled beneath shared umbrellas, and kept marching, undeterred by the downpour.

The Woman Behind The Movement

Humans First is led by Amy Kremer, a longtime MAGA power broker whose fingerprints are on some of the biggest conservative movements of the past two decades. A former Tea Party organizer, she co-founded Women for Trump, served within the Republican National Committee, and helped organize the January 6, 2021, rally for President Donald Trump that later spiraled into a riot at the US Capitol — though Kremer herself neither planned nor took part in the violence that followed.

From Grassroots Politics To Anti-AI Crusade

Now, Kremer is aiming that same organizing muscle at an entirely different target. "I think this is the most important fight of our lifetime," she said in an interview last month. "This technology could wipe us off the face of the planet" — a warning delivered with the same intensity she once brought to campaign rallies.

Her nonprofit champions an "America First" vision of AI development, one that puts everyday residents back in the driver's seat. "This technology has been built on American data with American taxpayer dollars invested into these companies with American energy and American land," Kremer said. "We have no voice in how the technology is used or how it impacts our lives, and that's not right."

On Saturday, she thanked volunteers who showed up despite the weather, writing on X: "The data center boom has been sold as inevitable. It is not. Communities have every right to ask what they are giving up and what they are getting in return. America is not for sale, and our communities are not collateral."

The Case For Data Centers — And The Case Against

Tech industry leaders have painted AI in almost utopian terms — a force that could supercharge economic growth, accelerate scientific breakthroughs, cure diseases, and free humans from tedious labor. But none of that vision can function without the physical backbone of data centers, the computing engines that train and run AI systems for companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

The scale of buildout is already massive: more than 1,400 AI data centers had been built or approved by the end of 2025, with many more proposals now flooding in throughout 2026.

Competing Visions Of National Interest

AI's defenders argue the stakes go beyond convenience — they see hyperscale data centers as essential to national security and to staying ahead of rising competitors like China, where researchers are closing the gap with America's top labs. Supporters also point to job creation, particularly during construction phases, as a tangible economic upside.

Critics, however, see a far murkier balance sheet. Opponents warn that data centers strain local environments, spike electricity bills, guzzle water supplies, and chip away at quality of life in host communities. Others take issue with what they describe as an opaque approval process, accusing local governments and developers of cutting residents out of decisions that reshape their own neighborhoods. Some object to AI itself, pointing to warnings from prominent industry leaders that the technology could hollow out white-collar employment entirely.

A Patchwork Of Resistance Across The Country

The pushback has taken many forms — petitions, packed planning meetings, and lawsuits aimed at halting construction before it starts. Some cities, towns, and even entire states have paused new projects, while others have banned data center construction outright. At the federal level, Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders have both called for a nationwide moratorium.

A Movement United In Frustration, Divided On Solutions

Despite the shared anger, the anti-AI coalition doesn't march in lockstep on strategy. Kremer, notably, rejects the moratorium approach favored by some of her ideological opposites.

"We do not believe in a nationwide moratorium or even a statewide moratorium. We believe that each community should have a choice in what they put in their community," Kremer said. "And that's not happening in a lot of places. It's being done behind closed doors."

Trump's AI Push Complicates The Picture

The politics here are anything but simple. Trump has made AI expansion a signature piece of his agenda, and his administration has thrown its weight behind the Stargate Project — a sweeping $500 billion initiative designed to build more data centers and fast-track federal permitting.

Kremer didn't hold back when discussing the tech industry's political loyalties. "I guarantee you that when Republicans are no longer controlling all the chambers, they're going to be cozying up to the Democrats because, at the end of the day, all they care about is power and control," she said of tech leaders.

Still, she stopped short of blaming Trump directly, instead pointing the finger at Congress. "It's Congress's responsibility, and they need to get their act together and listen to and protect the American people," Kremer said. "President Trump's executive orders, and his most recent executive order on testing frontier AI systems, need to go further."

As Saturday's demonstrations wound down, one thing seemed clear: the anti-AI US protests movement isn't fading quietly into the background — it's just getting started, community by community, sidewalk chalk message by sidewalk chalk message.
