A major US recession is still avoidable, and this is not a “gloom and doom scenario,” according to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

She highlighted that the economies of China, the European Union and the UK are slowing while the Federal Reserve is tightening monetary.

“Obviously there is a possibility that we would have a recession… But as I see it, a recession is not inevitable. Certainly, any kind of significant recession is absolutely not inevitable,” Raimondo said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Thursday.

She added that CEOs she’s spoken to across multiple industries had told her consumer spending and hiring remains robust, and American firms are still innovating new products, which could push economic activity as the Fed continues its rate hiking regime.

On the other hand, anxiety is soaring on Wall Street, where experts have been cautioning about an economic downturn. JPMorgan’s CEO warned that the US could tip into a recession in the next six to nine months and cause a 20% sell-off in stocks.
