A notable uptick in businesses leaving California for better opportunities in other states has emerged as a troubling trend. Between 2012 and 2019, this outflow nearly doubled.

Indeed, California's golden sheen seems tarnished to many in the business community as they seek more business-friendly climates.

The Inland Empire Economic Center, responsible for a study commissioned by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, cites a combination of high taxes, hefty rent prices, congestion, environmental conditions, and pandemic-related government restrictions as major factors behind the exodus.

Businesses leaving California are, metaphorically, casting off the Golden State’s heavy chains for freer markets.

Despite falling unemployment rates — California’s rate plummeted to 3.9 percent in September — analysts point to a shrinking labor force as the reason.

The state is akin to a ship in rough waters: certain sectors experience hiring freezes and layoffs, while others face persistent worker shortages.

Yet, state officials, standing firm on their economic footing, dismiss these conclusions. Citing rising employment data and soaring business license applications, they argue that the California economy is robust and thriving.

However, the reality of businesses leaving California is evidenced by a significant net loss. From 1990 to 2019, 37,313 business establishments relocated to California, but a staggering 54,630 moved out.

This has resulted in a net loss of 17,317 establishments over this 30-year period.

A recent example is the California Mexican-based company Cacique. After half a century in California, Cacique announced its move to Texas, opening a new dairy processing facility in Amarillo.

Their respective economies are experiencing a burst of growth as they welcome new businesses with open arms.

Notably, Atlanta is emerging as a competitive center for film production, rivalling Hollywood.

Austin is attracting a steady stream of info tech companies from Silicon Valley, and North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park is pulling in biomedical research firms.

Despite Business Exodus, California Remains Optimistic

Amid the uncertainty surrounding the state's economic future, Governor Gavin Newsom remains confident.
