Alpha Genesis operates on over 100 acres in Yemassee, where it maintains quarantine, breeding, holding, and research facilities for the monkeys. According to its website, Alpha Genesis “provides the highest quality nonhuman primate products and bio-research services worldwide.” The company claims a client base spanning North America, Europe, and Asia and offers biological materials such as serum, plasma, whole blood, and tissue samples. The company breeds monkeys for use in research on topics ranging from brain disorders to behavioral studies. Additionally, Alpha Genesis works with cynomolgus, rhesus, and capuchin monkeys, providing healthcare and testing services to the scientific community.Search and Capture Efforts
The Yemassee Police Department reported that thermal imaging cameras and baited traps were set up to help capture the escaped primates. Police warned residents to keep their homes secure and to avoid approaching the monkeys if spotted. "Residents are strongly advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent these animals from entering homes," the department said in a statement. "If you spot any of the escaped animals, please contact 911 immediately and refrain from approaching them." Greg Westergaard, CEO of Alpha Genesis, described the escape as a case of “follow-the-leader.”
