In a significant blow to internet services, Amazon’s cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), experienced a server outage that left publishers and numerous websites unable to operate.
The outage, which began on Tuesday, was primarily attributed to a service called AWS Lambda, utilized by customers to run code for various applications.
The disruption caused frustration among users, with errors surfacing for approximately two hours before AWS started recovering the affected services.
The AWS outage had a direct impact. The AWS Health Dashboard reported degradation issues across multiple services in the US-East-1 region, commencing around 3 PM ET.
Prompt updates were shared on the AWS status page, assuring customers that the recovery process was underway. By 6:30 pm E.T., Amazon announced the full restoration of all AWS services, bringing operations back to normalcy.
However, the situation was resolved with the last update from Amazon at 6:42 PM ET, stating that the root cause was identified and rectified. The incident was traced back to a subsystem responsible for capacity management for AWS Lambda.
