Iran’s hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, notorious for his brutal tactics, and known as the “Butcher of Tehran,” died in a helicopter crash in a remote part of the country on Sunday. He was 63. 

The helicopter, which also carried Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other local officials, went down near Jolfa, close to Iran’s border with Azerbaijan, approximately 375 miles northwest of Tehran.

The official Iranian news agency INRA reported that Raisi and the other passengers were traveling in a convoy of helicopters when the accident occurred.

 The two other helicopters in the convoy landed safely. However, state media announced Monday morning that there were “no signs of life” at the crash site, confirming the deaths of Raisi and all others on board.

“President Raisi, the foreign minister, and all the passengers in the helicopter were killed in the crash,” a senior Iranian official told Reuters. 

The wreckage was discovered around dawn on Monday in a mountainous region, roughly 12 hours after the helicopter went down amid hazardous weather conditions.

Hours after news of the crash, state TV networks ceased their regular broadcasts and started showing footage of massive prayer gatherings around the country.

After news of Raisi's death, there were reports of celebratory fireworks being launched in Tehran and elsewhere around Iran.

The Butcher of Tehran

Ebrahim Raisi earned his moniker, “the Butcher of Tehran,” for his role in mass executions of political prisoners in the 1980s. He was also credited with the brutal suppression of the 2022 protests against mandatory hijabs and other stringent religious laws.

 A protégé of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Raisi was sanctioned by the United States for his involvement in the 1988 mass execution of thousands of political prisoners at the end of the Iran-Iraq war.

Raisi rose to the presidency in 2021, securing a victory in an election marked by the lowest voter turnout in the history of the Islamic Republic. 

His tenure was characterized by increased enforcement of morality laws, and the formation of the “morality police.” He was also the architect of a harsh crackdown on anti-government protests, and an intensification of Iran’s nuclear program.

In the wake of the crash, state TV interrupted regular programming to broadcast footage of massive prayer gatherings across the country. There were also reports of celebratory fireworks in Tehran and other cities, presumably set off by Raisi’s detractors.
