Power outages in California
The logging town of Rio Dell was especially hard-hit by both recent Humbolt County earthquakes. With a population of 3,500, many of the residents were impacted when the first quake hit. And dozens of buildings were damaged and red-tagged.
Before people could make repairs and return to their homes Sunday’s tremblor jolted the area.
County officials urge residents to report damage from the earthquake.
Humboldt County public information officer Cati Gallardo warned, “We’re encouraging community members to be prepared for aftershocks.”
As of 5 pm Sunday, about 30% of Rio Dell residents are without water. Pacific Gas and Electric estimate that about half are still without power.
Sunday’s earthquake triggered the state’s early warning system. Some residents claim the alerts came after the quake hit.
Police Chief Greg Allen said Sunday that several houses in Rio Dell had been shaken off their foundations. And that there were lots of broken windows in homes and businesses. He also noted that several streets are inaccessible since they have “huge cracks” in them.
