Texas Mom’s Health Crisis
Cox’s journey through the legal system began when she argued that continuing her pregnancy posed a serious threat to her health.
Cox’s decision to terminate her pregnancy came after consultation with her doctor, who determined that the baby would not survive birth, and carrying the child to term could jeopardize her chances of future pregnancies.
Cox is 20 weeks pregnant with a baby diagnosed with trisomy 18 also known as Edwards syndrome. It is a condition with a significantly low survival rate and in the majority of cases, the baby dies in the womb or at birth.
The restrictive ban on abortion in Texas, prohibiting the procedure after six weeks, compelled Cox to seek a medical exemption from a judge—an exemption granted in her favor last week.

The state’s Attorney General, Ken Paxton, immediately appealed the decision, bringing the case to a standstill as it reached the state Supreme Court.
Paxton, who is facing multiple criminal investigations himself, prolonged Cox’s emotional ordeal and her medical crisis.
Paxton basically, argued that health risks and fatal fetal abnormalities do not qualify as life-threatening conditions. And to get an abortion in Texas now it doesn’t matter if the baby will die shortly after birth.
‘This past week of legal limbo has been hellish for Kate,’ said Nancy Northup of the Center for Reproductive Rights on social media.
