In 1996, investigators uncovered a chilling scene at Herbert Baumeister’s 18-acre estate in Westfield, Indiana. Thousands of bones and bone fragments were unearthed, pointing to a grim reality: at least 25 people may have been buried there. The discovery began decades of attempting to identify the victims, but some of the Fox Hollow Mystery is still unsolved.

A Renewed Effort to Identify Victims

Decades after the initial discovery, a new team has taken up the challenge of identifying Baumeister’s victims. Advances in DNA technology have opened new possibilities.

Investigators are urging relatives of men who went missing between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s to provide DNA samples.

These samples are being matched against DNA profiles extracted from the remains, potentially offering closure to grieving families.

The Dark Legacy of Herbert Baumeister

Baumeister, a 49-year-old thrift store owner and married father of three, was suspected of luring men to his home from Indianapolis gay bars while his family was away.

Authorities believe he killed and buried these men on his property.

In July 1996, Baumeister fled to Canada and died by suicide, leaving behind unanswered questions and unidentified victims.

By the late 1990s, dental records and early DNA technologies helped identify eight victims, but efforts stalled due to a lack of funding.

The Role of DNA in Solving the Mystery

Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison has spearheaded a renewed effort to identify the victims.

Working with the Indiana State Police, FBI, and the University of Indianapolis’ Human Identification Center, Jellison’s team is analyzing remains stored in a controlled environment. DNA samples from families of missing persons are being matched against profiles extracted from the remains.

In October 2023, the renewed effort identified a ninth victim: Allen Livingston. His family had long suspected his fate, and DNA samples from his mother and sister confirmed their fears.

Sharon Livingston, Allen’s mother, passed away in November 2024, finding some closure before her death.

Progress and Challenges

To date, scientists have extracted eight unique DNA profiles from the remains, with four matching victims identified in the 1990s: Jeffrey Jones, Manuel Resendez, Johnny Bayer, and Richard Hamilton.
