Gas Prices May Stay Elevated for Years Even After War Ends

APTOPIX Germany Energy Crisis

American drivers hoping for a quick return to cheap gas could be in for a painful reality check. Even if a U.S.-Iran peace deal finally materializes and the Strait of Hormuz reopens without further conflict, experts warn gasoline prices may stay elevated well into 2027.

That means the financial sting at the pump could continue through the next election cycle, keeping pressure on household budgets, inflation, and consumer confidence long after the fighting ends.

The average U.S. price for regular gasoline hit $4.54 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA data. Before the war, prices sat at just under $3 per gallon.

The gap is enormous, and analysts say it will not close quickly.

Why Drivers Should Brace for a Long Recovery

Even in the best-case scenario, the global oil market has already been deeply disrupted.

Fuel analysts say reopening the Strait of Hormuz would provide some immediate relief, but restoring stable oil flows, rebuilding production, and calming nervous shipping markets could take many months.

Patrick De Haan of the market data and analysis firm GasBuddy says drivers would likely notice lower prices within days if the strait genuinely reopened.

But he cautions that the bigger recovery will unfold much more slowly.

"The next third might take 3-6 months, and we'd finally get back to pre-war prices I'd say right now in early/mid 2027," De Haan, the firm's head of petroleum analysis, tells me via email.

That timeline highlights how deeply the crisis has reshaped global energy markets.

Oil Markets Still Face Major Turmoil

Energy experts say the problem goes far beyond a simple ceasefire.

During the conflict, oil producers across the Persian Gulf reduced crude output as export routes became increasingly dangerous and unreliable. Restarting those operations is not as simple as flipping a switch.

Shipping traffic through one of the world's most important energy chokepoints also remains a major concern.

"Even assuming a true and lasting end to the military conflict, it would still be several months before traffic through the Strait of Hormuz returns to its pre-war level," Rob Smith, a top fuels analyst with S&P Global Energy, said via email.

Other market watchers share the same concern.

The consultancy Rystad Energy argued in a recent note that even a 30-day phased reopening of the strait would represent an "optimistic scenario," adding that "meaningful volume recovery would happen in June at the earliest."

Why Gas Prices Fall So Slowly

Consumers often see gasoline prices spike overnight during a crisis. But when oil prices fall, relief tends to arrive at a frustratingly slow pace.

Analysts describe the pattern as "rocket and feathers."

Prices shoot up like a rocket when crude oil surges, but drift downward like feathers even after oil markets cool.

Part of the reason is that gas stations must first sell through fuel inventories purchased at higher prices before they can fully pass savings on to drivers.

Even though oil prices have already slipped this week amid signs of progress toward a possible deal, retail gasoline prices remain stubbornly high across much of the country.

A New Era of Energy Risk

Another major fear hanging over the market is whether the Strait of Hormuz can ever truly be considered stable again.

Experts warn that Iran's actions during the conflict may have permanently changed how global energy companies and shipping firms assess risk in the region.

Gregory Brew of the Eurasia Group addressed the issue in a new Foreign Affairs essay, warning that the threat alone could continue disrupting markets even after the war ends.

"Having demonstrated it once, Iran can now credibly threaten to shut down the Strait of Hormuz in the future. Its military capabilities have been degraded but not destroyed. It would take little effort for Iran to deter shippers from resuming traffic," he writes.

Brew also recommended that U.S. development finance agencies expand regional pipeline networks that bypass the strait entirely, reducing dependence on one vulnerable passageway.

The Bottom Line

For millions of Americans, the hope of returning to pre-war gas prices may remain out of reach for far longer than expected.

Even if diplomacy succeeds and the conflict fades, the economic aftershocks are likely to linger.

"U.S. gasoline prices would ... decline in the months following an end to the war but would be unlikely to return to pre-war levels before the end of the year," said Smith, the S&P analyst.
