Disgraced attorney Tom Girardi, facing wire fraud charges over alleged embezzlement of $18 million, has successfully secured a delay in his criminal trial alongside his co-defendant Christopher Kamon. Originally set for May, the trial could now be postponed until August, following a mutual request filed by both defense and prosecution teams.

In an 11-page stipulation filed Thursday, federal prosecutors and Girardi's defense attorneys articulated the necessity for additional time for thorough preparation. They emphasized that rushing the trial could potentially lead to a "miscarriage of justice."

The defense highlighted the recent turnover of a colossal 2-terabyte document cache from Girardi's now-defunct firm, Girardi Keese, underscoring the complexity of the case. Additionally, they pointed out their involvement in 18 other impending legal matters, stressing the need for continuity of counsel and adequate representation.

Despite the prosecution's initial push for an earlier trial date, citing concerns over Girardi's advancing age and potential competency issues, the defense advocated for a later date, ultimately securing a compromise set for May 21.
