Google has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Holocene, a direct-air capture startup, to support the removal of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. 

This deal, which represents Google's continued commitment to sustainability, aims to address both environmental and financial challenges in the field of carbon removal. 

Google is purchasing $10 million worth of carbon removal credits from Holocene at a rate of $100 per metric ton. This price aligns with the U.S. Department of Energy’s target for making direct-air capture technology economically viable.

Holocene’s Direct-Air Capture Technology

In a statement detailing the initiative, Google recognized the long road ahead for direct-air capture technology, or DAC, to achieve commercial viability.

 “Today, no DAC plant is delivering more than 2,000 tons of carbon removal credits per year. And while the technology is improving, prices remain in the many hundreds of dollars per ton of CO2 removed,” Google said. “For more companies and governments to invest in DAC projects, costs need to fall dramatically.”

Google’s partnership with Holocene is seen as a potential solution to this problem. 

As Google explained, “Our partnership with Holocene aims to address one of the key barriers facing DAC technologies: the hefty price tag. While Holocene’s technology is still in the early stages of development, it has the potential to bring down costs significantly over time.”

The Science Behind Direct-Air Capture

Direct-air capture involves collecting carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, concentrating it, and storing it in underground reservoirs. While the concept is promising in theory, it has proven to be an expensive and difficult technology to scale. Google’s investment and support aim to help Holocene overcome these hurdles.

According to Google, the partnership is expected to result in the capture and storage of 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide by the early 2030s.

 Holocene will continue refining its technology with the help of Google’s financial backing, which could eventually make direct-air capture a more scalable and cost-effective solution for carbon removal.

The Long-Term Goal: Net Zero Emissions

Google emphasized that this partnership is just one component of its broader sustainability strategy.
