New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo encouraged Tronc, the new owner of New York Daily News, to reconsider its decision to lay off 50 percent of its reporting staff.

In September last year, Tronc purchased New York Daily News from its longtime owner Mort Zuckerman. Currently, its circulation is around 200,000 daily and 260,000 Sunday. It is one of the top 10 newspapers in the country.

In a statement on Monday, Cuomo said his administration is ready to help the media company avoid the mass layoffs. The governor noted that the New York Daily News is an “important institution” and “one of our nation’s journalism giants. Eliminating a significant portion of its reporting staff “will undoubtedly devastate many households and hurt” the tabloid newspaper.

Additionally, the governor stated that Tronc did not inform the state about the mass layoffs.

Gov. Cuomo Urges Tronc to Review the Impact of its Decision

“I urge Tronc to reconsider this drastic move and stand ready to work with them to avert this disaster,” Cuomo said. “I understand that large corporations often only see profit and dividends as a bottom line. But in New York, we also calculate loss of an important institution, loss of jobs, and the impact on the families affected. I hope Tronc does the same and recalculates its decision. New York State stands ready to help.”
