Secret Service Subdues Armed Suspect; One Officer Shot, Saved by Bulletproof Vest | President Vows: 'Not Going to Deter Me'

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In one of the most shocking security breaches in modern American political history, a heavily armed gunman stormed a Secret Service checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner Saturday night, exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, and triggered the dramatic evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and nearly every senior member of the Trump Cabinet.

America held its breath. The president did not flinch.

The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. CNN Allen is being charged with two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, who said "many more charges" are expected to follow.

"This individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could," Pirro declared in the hours after the attack.

THE ATTACK: CHAOS IN THE BALLROOM

At 8:36 p.m., law enforcement officials said the suspect — described as a "sole gunman" — rushed a Secret Service checkpoint, running toward the ballroom where President Trump and other high-profile political figures were gathered, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

In surveillance video posted on social media by Trump shortly after the event, a person can be seen rushing past Secret Service agents down a hallway before the agents turn and raise their guns at him. 13newsnow

Attendees inside the ballroom reported hearing what sounded like at least five loud bangs before the room erupted into chaos. Secret Service agents swarmed the floor as guests dove beneath tables. Someone could be heard yelling, "Out of the way, sir!" Others screamed to get down.

The suspect exchanged gunfire with law enforcement and was tackled to the ground. He was not hurt, while a Secret Service officer was struck in his bulletproof vest but was expected to survive. NBC News

Within seconds, rifle-toting Secret Service agents rushed the stage and swept Trump away along with Melania, Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. House Speaker Mike Johnson was seen on video rushing out of the hotel with his security detail.

TRUMP UNBOWED: 'I DO IT FOR THE COUNTRY'

Hours later, Trump stood before reporters at an extraordinary late-night White House press conference — still dressed in his tuxedo — and delivered a message of defiance.

"I want to live because I want to make this country great," Trump said, brushing aside a question about personal safety. "It's not going to deter me."

Asked how repeated assassination threats impact him personally, the president was matter-of-fact: "I like not to think about it. I think I handle it about as well as it can be handled. I do it for the country."

Trump expressed gratitude for the Secret Service response, marveling that the gunman was subdued in seconds. One officer was shot, but Trump noted he was "in very high spirits." Trump described Allen as "a guy who looked pretty evil" who was "fighting hard" while being pinned down by law enforcement, and said he believed him to be a lone wolf. "These are crazy people, and they have to be dealt with,"Trump said.

The president called on all Americans to choose a different path: "I ask that all Americans commit with their hearts to resolving our differences peacefully."
