The looming Hampshire College closure has sent ripples through academia, as one of Massachusetts’ most distinctive liberal arts institutions prepares to shut its doors permanently — a decision shaped by declining enrollment and mounting financial strain.

Founded in 1965 in Amherst, Hampshire College has long stood as a symbol of experimental education. Now, its board of trustees says the institution can no longer withstand the economic headwinds battering small colleges across the United States.

Financial pressures and shrinking enrollment take their toll

In a statement released on the college’s website, trustees described a perfect storm of financial challenges intensified by broader external shifts.

Despite efforts to stabilize operations — including boosting enrollment, restructuring debt, and generating revenue through land sales — those measures fell short.

“We are faced with the clear, heartbreaking reality,” the board said, “that progress on these key factors has fallen far short of what we had hoped.”

At the center of the crisis lies a dwindling student body, forcing what officials described as “extraordinary cuts” to operating budgets just to sustain educational programs.

A phased farewell for students

The Hampshire College closure will take effect after the fall semester this year, but the institution is attempting to soften the landing for its students.

Final-year students, known as Division III, will be allowed to complete their degrees on campus, with access to housing and support services through the semester. Meanwhile, underclassmen — Divisions I and II — will be offered transfer pathways through agreements with partner institutions.

These include Amherst College, Bennington College, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts, Mount Holyoke College, Prescott College, Smith College, and University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The college confirmed that commencement ceremonies will proceed as planned in May, with an additional streamlined ceremony scheduled for winter graduates completing their studies in December. Deposits will also be refunded to all accepted students.

A reflection of a national trend

For many, the Hampshire College closure is more than a local loss — it’s emblematic of a broader shift in higher education.

Sophomore Joan Priester described the decision as a sign of deeper systemic challenges, pointing to economic instability and changing societal priorities as contributing factors.

Her perspective echoes national data cited by the Hechinger Report, which found that nearly 300 colleges and universities in the U.S. shut down between 2008 and 2023.
