Hunter Biden Pardon: Sweeping Clemency Controversy

In a written statement, President Biden explained his decision, claiming that the charges against Hunter were politically motivated and designed to harm both him and his son.
“The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.”
Biden said. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong.”
Biden had previously vowed not to use executive powers to assist his son. This full pardon was a complete U-turn to his promises.
The controversy is occurring just weeks before Biden leaves office and President-elect Trump assumes power.
It also attempts to pardon Hunter for any crimes he may have committed in a ten-year period.
A “full and unconditional pardon” signed by Biden covers “those offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024, including but not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted.”
Trump Responds
Former President Donald Trump sharply criticized Biden's decision. On Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” Trump's response highlights the polarized political landscape, as he accuses Biden of weaponizing the justice system. Trump's spokesman, Steven Cheung, echoed these sentiments, insisting that, “The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system.” Hunter Biden’s Legal Troubles Hunter Biden, 54, had faced significant legal challenges, including convictions on gun charges in Delaware and a felony tax case in September. His sentencing was set for December 12 before the pardon was announced.
