U.S. Concerns
The U.S. is particularly worried about the possibility of retaliatory strikes against Israel and U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and Syria. Five U.S. service members and two contractors were injured in a rocket attack on a U.S. base in Iraq last week. Brian Finucane, a former State Department attorney specializing in the law of war, emphasized the seriousness of the current circumstances, noting that the U.S. is closely monitoring developments. The Pentagon's decision to publicly announce the deployment of 2 carriers and a nuclear submarine indicates that they are intended to serve as a deterrent. For the first time this month, Israel has raised its military alert level after observing signs of preparation by Iran and Hezbollah for potential attacks. The Israeli military chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, has approved plans for both offensive and defensive operations. According to Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, “We are in the days of vigilance and readiness. The threats from Tehran and Beirut may materialize, and it is important to explain to everyone that readiness, preparedness, and vigilance are not synonyms for fear and panic.”U.S. Intelligence and Strategic Moves
The U.S. has shared intelligence with Israel, revealing shifts in Iranian military postures. U.S. officials also caution that such movements alone do not provide sufficient information to predict the timing of a potential attack. John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, stated that the U.S. assessment aligns with Israel's view that an attack by Iran and its proxies could occur soon.
