Skywatchers may notice something unusual unfolding overhead this week as Jupiter's shift direction brings an end to months of celestial backtracking.

Beginning tonight, the solar system’s largest planet will appear to change course in the night sky, reversing its apparent westward drift and returning to its normal eastward journey among the stars.

Though it may seem like cosmic choreography gone wrong, the phenomenon is actually a well-known astronomical illusion.

Retrograde Motion Comes to an End

The gas giant Jupiter will appear to reverse direction starting March 10, marking the conclusion of a retrograde phase that began in November 2025.

During that period, Jupiter seemed to slide westward across the stars of the constellation Gemini — a motion that can puzzle casual observers scanning the heavens.

Under normal circumstances, outer planets drift eastward across the night sky when viewed against the distant starfield.

Those planets include:

• Mars

• Jupiter

• Saturn

• Uranus

• Neptune

But every so often, they appear to slow down, halt and briefly travel backward — a celestial illusion that has fascinated astronomers for centuries.

The Cosmic Illusion Behind the Motion

This apparent reversal, known as retrograde motion, is not caused by planets actually changing course.

Instead, the effect occurs because Earth travels around the sun faster than the more distant outer planets.

As Earth catches up to and overtakes one of these worlds, the shifting viewpoint makes the planet appear to pause in the sky and then drift backward relative to the background stars.

It’s similar to passing a slower car on a highway: as you overtake it, the vehicle beside you briefly seems to move backward even though both cars are still moving forward.

In astronomical terms, the effect happens near opposition, the point when a planet sits directly opposite the Sun in Earth’s sky.

Jupiter Resumes Its Eastward Path

Now that Earth has moved beyond that alignment, Jupiter’s apparent backward slide is coming to an end.

The giant planet will once again resume its eastward motion, continuing its steady trek through the evening sky.

Observers will be able to follow this path until late June, when Jupiter gradually disappears from view.

At that point, the planet will slip into solar conjunction on July 29, moving too close to the sun’s glare to be visible from Earth.

Jupiter Will Return to the Morning Sky

The giant world won’t stay hidden for long.

Astronomers say Jupiter will reappear in the predawn sky around mid-August, rising before the sun as a brilliant morning object.

It will remain in its normal forward motion until Dec. 12, when the planet will once again enter a new retrograde phase, according to sky-tracking data from In-The-Sky.org.
