Massive Winter Storm Expected to Slam East Coast as Nearly 30 Million Face Blizzard Warnings
The weather Channel

A powerful late-season winter storm is set to strike the East Coast, placing nearly 30 million people under blizzard warnings and threatening to disrupt travel, power systems, and daily life across several major cities.

Forecasters say the storm will bring heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously low visibility beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday. Areas from New York City to parts of New England and coastal New Jersey are expected to face the most severe conditions.

Meteorologists describe the system as one of the most significant winter storms in years for densely populated parts of the Northeast. Officials warn that the combination of heavy snow and sustained winds could create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous or even impossible in some areas.

New York City Braces for Major Snowfall

New York City could see some of the worst impacts. Weather officials are forecasting between 12 and 18 inches of snow in the metropolitan area, with higher totals possible in surrounding regions. This marks the first time in nearly a decade that the city has been placed under a blizzard warning.

City leaders are urging residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Hundreds of salt spreaders have been deployed, and thousands of sanitation trucks are being converted into snowplows. Officials are also recruiting temporary workers to help clear sidewalks once the storm passes.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm and activated members of the National Guard to assist with emergency response efforts.
