As for Jill Jones: she has the absolute legal right to speak. This is America. She can give interviews to every newspaper on the planet. The tabloid press has every right to publish her claims, provided they include appropriate attribution and do not assert the allegations as established fact. But rights and responsibilities are not the same thing. Legally, what Jones is describing — if true — constitutes felony battery. The statute of limitations in California for felony assault and battery is generally three years, though California has made exceptions in cases involving celebrity defendants. The relevant date here is 1984. There is no active legal case. There is no pending prosecution. What exists is an allegation, made by one person, about events that allegedly occurred over 40 years ago, against a man who has been dead for ten years and cannot respond.

The estate faces perhaps the most complex set of considerations. It has a fiduciary duty to manage Prince's artistic legacy and financial interests. Arguing that a documentary would cause "generational harm" is a legitimate position for an estate to take — courts have recognized reputational interests of deceased persons in various contexts, particularly when estates actively manage and commercialize that reputation. But there is a tension here that cannot be ignored: when an estate uses its legal leverage to suppress documentary content that includes allegations of serious misconduct, it places itself in the uncomfortable position of appearing to prioritize commercial protection over accountability. That tension does not resolve itself easily, and it invites exactly the kind of public scrutiny the estate sought to avoid.

THE QUESTION NOBODY IS ASKING

Here is what I want to say directly to you, the reader — and I want to be clear that I am not dismissing Jill Jones, I am not defending Prince unconditionally, and I am not suggesting that allegations of domestic violence should never be taken seriously. They should always be taken seriously. Always.

But I am a journalist, and part of my job is to ask the questions that other outlets — particularly the tabloid press that is running these stories this week — appear entirely uninterested in asking.

The timing here is curious, to put it diplomatically. This is the 10th anniversary of Prince's death. Publishing allegations timed to a milestone anniversary guarantees maximum exposure. It is a well-understood media strategy. That does not make the allegations false. But it does raise a legitimate question about why now — and who benefits.
