Maui in Chaos: Deadly Wildfires leave hundreds homeless, search for victims continues – USA Herald
Death toll rises
The remains of at least 114 people have been found and about half of them have been identified. But the number of still missing victims is a sad reality.
While the search continues, hope for finding survivors dwindles with each passing day.
Maui Police Chief John Pelletier admits that some remains may be impossible to recover due to the fire’s intensity. Despite this challenge, authorities are leaving no stone unturned, covering 85% of the disaster zone in collaboration with the FBI.
The process of sifting through the wreckage of larger buildings, a challenging and time-consuming task, underscores the complex nature of the operation. The recovery process may extend for weeks as the last 15% of the debris is meticulously examined.
Identifying the Victims
Families anxiously wait for news of their loved ones. And Maui County officials are encouraging people to provide DNA samples to aid in the identification of victims.
