COVID-19 cases are surging to new highs in the U.S. and elsewhere

While Taiwan marked another major milestone, other countries are facing the second wave of the virus, which is proving bigger than the first. The United States, for instance, set a new daily record of 99,321 cases on Friday, surpassing India’s single-day record of 97,894 COVID-19 cases on September 17.

Based on data from the Covid Tracking Project, 14 states and one U.S. territory reported record high hospitalizations on Friday, 46,688 were admitted in hospitals.

Meanwhile, a new variant of the coronavirus that is believed to have originated from farmworkers in Spain has spread across Europe and now accounts for most of the new cases reported in many European countries, a study suggests.

The study said Spain’s popularity as a holiday destination may be behind the spread of the new coronavirus variant.

As a response, France and Germany are going back into lockdown. Germany will enter a so-called “lockdown light” from November 2, while France started its month-long lockdown on Thursday.
