Families considering a Trump Account should look beyond the initial deposit and compare it with other financial products. Options may include 529 education plans, custodial brokerage accounts, and Roth IRAs when a child has earned income.

Each account has different tax rules, contribution limits, investment choices, and withdrawal restrictions. The best fit will depend on a family’s income, emergency savings, education plans, and long-term goals.

Parents should also remember that the federal contribution applies only to children born during the four-year pilot period. Older children may still qualify for a Trump Account, but they will not receive the government’s $1,000 seed deposit.

A Financial Head Start With Unequal Paths

Trump Accounts offer a clear benefit to qualifying families. The federal government is willing to place $1,000 into a long-term investment account for a child, potentially giving that child a financial head start before adulthood.

The program could also introduce millions of families to investing. However, the children whose families can contribute thousands of dollars each year may enter adulthood with far more than those whose accounts contain only the federal deposit and market growth.

The planned Oval Office ceremony will focus attention on ownership, investment, and opportunity. The long-term test will be whether Trump Accounts build meaningful wealth across income levels or primarily reward the families already best equipped to keep investing.
