A federal judge in Florida has dismissed a high-profile defamation lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump over a controversial report by The Wall Street Journal, marking a pivotal twist in a case tangled with media power, politics, and allegations tied to Jeffrey Epstein.

The ruling — now widely referred to as Trump's Wall Street Journal lawsuit dismissal — does not end the fight. Instead, it resets the stage. U.S. District Judge Darrin P. Gayles granted Trump a two-week window to refile the lawsuit with stronger legal footing.

Like a courtroom chess match paused mid-game, the decision signals not defeat, but a demand for sharper moves.

The disputed report at the center

Allegations of a “bawdy” letter

The lawsuit stems from a July 17, 2025 article titled “Jeffrey Epstein’s Friends Sent Him Bawdy Letters for a 50th Birthday Album. One Was From Donald Trump.” The report claimed Trump contributed a provocative letter accompanied by a lewd drawing to Epstein’s birthday collection in 2003.

Trump has forcefully denied the allegation, asserting that the drawing central to the story was fabricated.

In an unusual twist, one of the named defendants in the suit was media mogul Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation owns the Journal — and who has long been viewed as a key ally of Trump.

Ahead of publication, Trump personally contacted Murdoch in an attempt to halt the story, underscoring the stakes behind the scenes.

Evidence, publication, and legal thresholds

“Actual malice” becomes the battleground

The Journal initially withheld the image referenced in the report. It later surfaced publicly in September when the House Oversight Committee released it after receiving materials from Epstein’s estate.

Lawyers for the Journal argued the reporting met journalistic standards and did not qualify as defamation. They maintained there was no evidence the article was published with knowledge of falsehood or reckless disregard for the truth — the legal threshold known as “actual malice.”

Judge Gayles agreed.

He wrote that Trump’s complaint “fails to adequately allege actual malice,” emphasizing that the newspaper had taken steps to verify the authenticity of the drawing. Trump’s assertion that the image was fake, the judge said, does not prove the publication harbored serious doubts.

“Because President Trump has not plausibly alleged that defendants published the article with actual malice, both counts must be dismissed,” Gayles concluded.

What comes next for Trump’s legal team

A narrow window to revive the case

Despite the dismissal, the ruling leaves Trump with a path forward. His legal team has until April 27 to refile the lawsuit, provided they can present new evidence showing the Journal knowingly published false information or acted with reckless disregard.

The judge also noted a lack of detailed claims regarding specific damages in the original filing — another gap Trump’s attorneys must address.

A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team said they would move quickly to strengthen and refile what they described as a “powerhouse lawsuit,” vowing continued action against what they called misleading media narratives.

Trump echoed that stance on Truth Social, framing the decision not as a defeat but as a procedural reset. “It is not a termination,” he wrote, “it is a suggested re-filing.”
