In June 2022, Wei received $5,000 from a Chinese intelligence official as payment for his activities.
Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, 26, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy and receipt of a bribe by a public official.
According to his indictment, Zhao began working with a Chinese intelligence officer in August 2021, providing sensitive information, including photos, videos, blueprints, and operational plans for U.S. military exercises.
He allegedly received around $14,866 in payments from the Chinese intelligence officer in return.
National Security Implications
Olsen emphasized the severity of these cases. He stated that sensitive military information ending up in the hands of a foreign government poses a significant threat to national security.
The charges against Wei and Zhao demonstrate China’s determination to obtain critical information about U.S. defense capabilities. Such breaches not only compromise the nation’s security but also violate the solemn obligation of military personnel to protect their country and fellow service members.
