In a groundbreaking development, thousands of people are reportedly eager to undergo a unique procedure—having a portion of their skull removed to make way for brain chips developed by Elon Musk's Neuralink

This surge in interest follows FDA approval earlier this year for Neuralink's human trials, marking a significant stride towards a future where man and machine coexist in unprecedented ways.

Green Light for Brain Chips

This year, Elon Musk's brainchild, Neuralink, gained FDA approval to proceed with human trials for its innovative brain chips.

The trials were initially rejected in March. The FDA cited safety concerns, including potential wire movement and overheating, the FDA now greenlit Neuralink's venture into the uncharted territory of brain-machine interfaces. Musk had described the device as a "Fitbit in your skull," emphasizing its potential to revolutionize the relationship between humans and technology.

According to a recent report by Ashlee Vance, biographer of Elon Musk, Neuralink has witnessed an outpouring of interest from thousands of prospective patients. Vance, who visited Neuralink's facilities multiple times, disclosed that despite not having implanted the device in a human yet, the company aims to operate on 11 people in the coming year and over 22,000 by 2030.

 Brain Chips Trial

In September, Neuralink commenced the recruitment process for its first human trial.

The company is actively seeking individuals with paralysis in all four limbs due to spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Neuralink envisions creating a symbiosis between humans and machines.

The goal is to enable the paralyzed person to send messages or play games using their thoughts—an ambitious goal that starts with assisting those with neurological disorders.

To participate in Neuralink's revolutionary experiment, volunteers must be willing to undergo a craniectomy—a procedure involving the removal of a portion of their skull.

A large robot would then insert electrodes and ultrathin wires into the brain. According to Musk's biographer, this surgical process, taking a couple of hours, replaces the removed skull portion with the device. The ultrathin array, approximately one-fourteenth the width of a human hair strand, showcases the intricate nature of this technological marvel.

Race Against Competitors

Elon Musk, known for his sense of urgency, expressed the need for Neuralink to accelerate its progress to stay competitive in the burgeoning field of brain-computer interfaces.

Acknowledging the advancements made by competitors like Synchron and Onward, Musk emphasized the imperative of keeping pace, especially in the face of potential challenges posed by artificial intelligence. The urgency stems from Musk's concern about ensuring friendly AI that aligns with human interests.

While Neuralink has not yet implanted its device in a human, it has conducted 155 implantation surgeries on various animal test subjects using a robot.

Musk's relentless pursuit of progress has led to ongoing enhancements in the technology, with aspirations for a fully automated surgery process. The biographer notes that Neuralink has faced competition from other startups, and Musk's commitment to innovation remains unwavering.

Balancing Urgency with Caution

Despite Musk's urgency, Shivon Zilis, Neuralink's director of special projects, urged caution, drawing parallels with Musk's experience at SpaceX. Zilis emphasized the importance of not compromising safety, stating, "We can't blow up the first three. That's not an option here." This cautionary note reflects the delicate balance required in pioneering technologies that bridge the gap between humanity and artificial intelligence.

As Neuralink pushes the boundaries of neuroscience and technology, the increasing interest from potential participants underscores society's fascination with the prospect of merging minds with machines.

The journey towards Elon Musk's vision of brain chips as a commonplace reality is marked by challenges, competition, and a careful balance between urgency and caution. The coming years will undoubtedly witness groundbreaking developments as Neuralink forges ahead in reshaping the future of human-machine interactions.
