Evidence Pointed to Stalking and Pre-Attack Surveillance
Prosecutors presented digital evidence showing Frye had traveled from North Carolina to Virginia days before the killing. Cellphone location data placed him near Montgomery’s apartment complex, and neighbors reported seeing an unfamiliar man sitting nearby for hours the day before the attack.
Surveillance footage later showed Frye at a nearby gas station wearing dark clothing. Investigators said Google search records and text messages revealed mounting anger and jealousy after Montgomery blocked him and moved in with a roommate.
Authorities believe Frye entered the apartment through a second-floor balcony with a faulty lock during the early morning hours.
Key Digital Evidence at Trial
One of the most significant pieces of evidence came from a Bluetooth connection between Frye’s phone and Montgomery’s iPad shortly after she went to bed. Prosecutors argued this placed Frye inside the apartment at the time of the attack.
The defense challenged the lack of DNA evidence and argued the digital data was circumstantial, but jurors ultimately rejected claims that the killing was accidental or committed by another person.
