Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reigniting debate around misinformation, free speech, and the role of social media platforms in moderating online content.
Speaking on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, Zuckerberg challenged critics and the media, arguing that users should be trusted to make their own decisions online, without overbearing content controls.
“There’s a version of history that says that individual people are very powerful and have a lot of kind of autonomy… And then there’s like all these other narratives where people try to kind of diminish peoples’ autonomy and authority,” he said.

Meta’s Shift in Content Moderation
In January, Meta ended its controversial fact-checking operations and loosened restrictions on user speech across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
Zuckerberg described this move as part of a broader effort to “restore free expression” and acknowledged that Meta’s previous approach to moderation had “gone too far,” veering into outright censorship.
