2019's Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix was a major hit. The film grossed more than $1 billion at the box office. In some countries, it is now available for streaming on Netflix and a sequel is confirmed for 2024.

The 2024 sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is expected to be a musical and pick up where 2019's Joker left off. It will once again star Phoenix in the Joker role. However, pop star and actress Lady Gaga is expected to play Harley Quinn.

What to know about the Joker sequel

Viewers eager to see Joker: Folie à Deux can anticipate the film's release on October 4, 2024. Moreover, other stars set to make appearances in the movie include Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson.

Lady Gaga's role as the likely Harley Quinn has captured much attention as folks look forward to this film.

Gaga's version of Quinn is also presumably going to be in a different universe than the other iteration of Harley Quinn played by actress Margot Robbie. That's largely because the original Joker movie itself was established as a standalone, in its own universe.

This new Joker sequel is furthermore expected to take place in Arkham Asylum, where Phoenix's Joker ended up at the end of 2019's film. Folie à Deux, which translates to "madness shared by two," also indicates that both Phoenix's Joker and Gaga's Quinn could end up wreaking havoc throughout the movie's plot.

Director Todd Phillips is returning for the sequel to 2019's Joker. He also co-wrote Folie à Deux and shared the teaser photo of what looks to be Gaga's Harley Quinn staring at Phoenix's Joker in apparent shock.

Other Joker: Folie à Deux details to be aware of

In early December 2022, Phillips shared an image of the Joker in next year's sequel. This showed the character appearing somewhat comatose with his head back. Viewers also saw shaving cream on his face, with one of Arkham Asylum's employees doing the grooming for him.

On social media, many people exhibited excitement over the latest updates for Folie à Deux. If this film does as well as anticipated, a third movie could very well arrive in theaters before 2030.
