Emergency authorities and investigators have arrived on the scene of a significant fire that wreaked havoc on a popular and historic Harrisburg destination: the Broad Street Market. The inferno took hold in the early hours of Monday, with Harrisburg Fire officials confirming they received the call around 12:57 a.m.

The Harrisburg market fire consumed part of the market's structure, specifically the slightly newer brick building situated at the rear.

Although firefighters made swift and decisive tactical decisions to control the blaze, the rear half of the second building, facing 6th Street, unfortunately succumbed to the flames.

No Casualties Reported Amid Harrisburg Market Fire

Adding a silver lining to the situation, fire crews verified that the building was unoccupied at the time of the Harrisburg fire.

Consequently, there were no reported injuries.

Surveillance footage is currently under review as part of the ongoing investigation to identify the cause of the fire.

Unraveling the Aftermath of the Fire

Brian Enterline, Fire Chief of Harrisburg, reflected on the losses sustained due to the Harrisburg  fire, emphasizing the blow dealt to the city's heritage.

He stated, "We unfortunately lost a historic landmark here in Harrisburg, a significant piece of our collective identity. We're starting to envision what rebuilding might look like."

Harrisburg's Broad Street Market, home to nearly 40 vendors, is no ordinary location.

Dating back to 1860, it has the unique privilege of being recognized as the oldest continuously operated market house in the U.S. The Harrisburg market fire, which damaged the nearly 150-year-old brick building, leaves a palpable void in the hearts of many.

Community Response and Road Closures

Following the incident, locals assembled at the scene of the Harrisburg market fire, their dismay plain to see.

Both Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro were present and committed their support.

Governor Shapiro described the Broad Street Market as a place where the community comes together and acknowledged the devastating impact of the fire.

The aftermath of the Harrisburg market fire has also led to traffic disruptions.

Temporary one-direction closures are in effect on Verbeke Street, between Capital Street to N 6th Street and from Fulton Street to Williams Street.

Fulton Street is similarly affected between itself and Verbeke Street.
