Parler, the once-controversial social media platform, is back in the spotlight under new ownership.

It’s relaunching now that a new media consortium led by Ryan Rhodes has purchased the site.

Parler aims to redefine itself as a bastion of free speech for users across the political spectrum. 

WIRED magazine caught up with Rhodes, who expressed “Our goal is to make Parler what it could have been, as a true open platform for everybody to have discourse, right or left.”

New Beginnings

Established over three years ago, Parler initially gained traction as an alternative platform championing free speech. 

However, its trajectory took a dramatic turn amidst the events of January 6, 2020.

Following a period of being offline, Parler has resurfaced under new ownership, with promises of providing a space for legal and unrestricted expression. 

The platform's reentry into the Apple App Store signifies a fresh start, hinting at a potential return to Google Play in the near future.

Parler and January 6

Undoubtedly, Parler's involvement in the January 6 Capitol Hill riots remains a defining moment in its history. 

The platform faced backlash and was removed from major app stores due to its purported role in facilitating discussions related to the insurrection. 

During a House Oversight Committee hearing in 2021 it was revealed that on more than 50 occasions, Parler had attempted to warn the FBI of the growing potential for violence before the January 6 Capitol Hill rioting.

The FBI acknowledged that it had received those emails, but never specified why no direct action was taken.

Despite proof of cooperation with law enforcement the controversy remains.

The Ongoing Debate

Opinions regarding Parler vary widely. While some view it as a haven for right-wing extremism, others perceive it has been unfairly targeted by mainstream tech companies. 

Parler's legal team denies accusations of promoting unlawful behavior, asserting its commitment to upholding free speech within legal boundaries. As it reemerges into the social media sphere, it faces both skepticism and anticipation.

Whether Parler can fulfill its promise of providing a platform for diverse voices while ensuring accountability remains to be seen.
