Over the past several years, bipartisanship in this country has become increasingly harder to come upon. Political tribalism is intensifying as more people in both major political parties view the opposing side as the enemy.

This may make for interesting political attack ads. Yet when it comes to taking care of business in Congress, extreme political tribalism is often a prerequisite for gridlock.

Of course, one way of getting around this is via supermajorities. Having one party simultaneously controlling both congressional chambers and the White House also helps.

Nevertheless, when it comes to comparing Democrats' legislative effectiveness with that of Republicans, most Americans feel that Democrats are more capable.

Here's what the American people have to say

A recent poll from Monmouth University sheds some interesting light on how everyday folks view the US political system. As things currently stand, 53% of the country agrees that Democrats have been more successful in passing bills during periods when they control the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, a whopping 65% of Americans feel that Republicans have failed at passing legislation, even when they held enough seats in Congress to do so.

Political fractures in the Republican Party and more

New data from Monmouth comes amid growing divisions within the GOP.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, for instance, has taken heat for declining to back a FISA amendment that would require the government to get a warrant before spying on American citizens. The backlash follows already-ongoing efforts from GOP lawmakers like Rep. Marjorie Greene to have the Republican speaker removed.

Many people have made the case that if right-wing lawmakers can't unite amongst themselves, their chances of accomplishing anything in office are basically non-existent. Going into the 2024 general election, there's no sign that GOP political fractures will heal anytime soon.

Democrats, meanwhile, are working to regain control of the House this November. The lower chamber's Republican majority has been getting smaller over time, giving left-wing candidates some hope.

If Democrats manage to take back the House and hold onto their majority in the Senate, their chances of getting even more legislation passed will see an exponential increase.
